Preface

There is a strong possibility that you might experience the “Failed to install add-on from ZIP file” on older Kodi versions, from Kodi 18.2 to 18.9 Leia. It frequently occurs when installing Kodi builds, mainly the No Limits build and Streamline build. In this article, we will show you how to fix this error irrespective of what device you use (whether Amazon Firestick, Android, PC, or Mac).

What Is Meant by Failed to Install Add-on from ZIP File?

Introducing a Kodi addon from an independent ZIP document is a common installation procedure on Kodi. Some third-party addons are not present on the Kodi archive or don’t make use of a substantial media source Kodi can easily get to. They are typically facilitated on websites like GitHub as ZIP documents. To install addons, without their facilitators like Git Browser, you need to download and install them from compressed documents.

Causes of Failure to Install Add-on

Cause #1. Kodi is Disconnected from the Internet

The first thing to do is to check whether the Kodi is properly connected to the internet or not. You can always confirm your device network connection with an installed browser by attempting to access any website.  If you use a VPN (which is recommended when streaming), make sure to check proxy settings on your Kodi.

Cause #2. Disable Default Applications Installation

By default, Appstore does not allow many streaming devices to install applications from outside sources, due to security concerns. In order to install add-ons on Kodi properly, you have to enable the unknown sources setting on the device. For that go to:

  • Settings menu > Apps > Kodi.
  • If you are a Firestick user, you should go to Settings > My Fire TV.
  • Next, go to the Developer Options.
  • And then click on ‘Enable App from Unknown Sources’.
  • In addition to this, you can also try to enable ADB debugging but only if on a safe network connection.

Cause #3. Internet Issues

Network fluctuation can also be the cause of failed installation. In that case, all you need to do is to try and install the addon again.

Cause #4. Kodi Not Up-to-Date

Leaving your Kodi without updating for a long time may be one of the causes. Updating Kodi to the most recent version is a reliable way of solving this kind of problem. An outdated app can present many other issues like incompatible add-on versions, systematic bugs, and more.

Cause #5. Use of Different Builds

We understand there is a massive number of users who use certain builds that are only compatible with outdated Kodi versions such as Kodi Leia. Although we would not recommend that, given it is the main cause of the issue being discussed. If you are not planning to stop using the build versions anytime soon, you should at least reinstall it in order to solve the problem.

Looking for better builds that currently work with the latest Kodi version? Here are some of the top Kodi builds to try right now.

Cause #6. Outdated Version of Kodi Add-on

If you are installing an outdated version of an addon, there is a strong possibility that your current Kodi doesn’t support it. We would recommend all users install the latest addons from official sources.

Cause #7. ZIP File May Not Be Add-on/Repository ZIP File

Does a message like “Failed to install addons from ZIP files located at…” pop up? It could be that the selected zip files are not an addon/repository. If that’s the case, you can try to decompress the ZIP file before installing the Kodi addon/repo ZIP files.

Cause #8. Error Log

The error log also confirms the unsuccessful installation of add-ons. You can always just go to the log file and check for troubleshooting options.

How to Clear Kodi Cache On Various Devices?

This is the way to fix the ‘Failed to Install a Dependency’ error by clearing the cache on Kodi. We’ll show you how this is done on a few well-known devices.

On Android Boxes

Open Settings, go to Apps > Kodi. Click on ‘Clear Cache’ and confirm.

On Amazon Fire TV/Fire TV Stick:

You can clear all cache stored on your Fire TV by going to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Kodi > ‘Clear Cache.’

On Nvidia Shield TV

Go to Settings > Apps > Kodi > Clear Cache.

On Windows/Mac/Linux

 An ideal way to clear the cache is by utilizing a Kodi addon named Indigo.

How to Rebuild Kodi's Database

This is also one of the ways to fix the Failed to Install a Dependency Kodi error by modifying your Kodi’s database.

Note

Modifying Kodi’s data set may erase your addons.

Start your Kodi as an administrator. On Windows, right-click on Kodi’s symbol and select ‘Run as Administrator.

  • Open Kodi and click on the Gear Icon in the upper left corner;
  • Click on ‘Document Manager.’
  • On the left half of the screen, double click to open ‘Profile Directory’;
  • Then open the ‘Information base’ organizer;
  • Right-click on it ‘Addon27.db’  and delete it;
  • Confirm your choice and erase the record from Kodi.
  • Restart the app.
  • Try again to install some addons and check whether you’ll experience the Dependency error.
  • If the error still occurs, as a last resort, you can always reinstall your Kodi.

This issue frequently happens when you attempt to install or utilize an add-on update to a more recent version of Kodi on a previous version. In this case, you will need a new install. This probably means losing your current information, settings, and add-ons.

The Bottom Line

Dealing with any of these problems should be fairly straightforward if you follow our instructions. Kodi is a handy streaming platform that offers plenty of free movies and shows – whether via official Kodi apps, third-party addons, and/or APKs. So, sit back, relax and enjoy a seamless Kodi experience.
